Higher education system in France is different than in Indonesia. To decide your study path, begin with choosing a scheme : University or Specialized school. Details on our booklet p. 8-9
There is no systematic equivalence between foreign and French diplomas or degrees. When applying for admission in a French university, the holders of a foreign diploma must also apply for the equivalence. Only the host institution is entitled to assess foreign diplomas.
The scheme can be defined as follows:
Three degrees: Bachelor, Master, Doctorate
A course- and semester-based organization validated by credits/ECTS1
The framework :
allows common recognition by any French or European university
enables students to design their own training path according to their own personal career project
facilitates mobility and exchanges within the European Union
favours better recognition of the diplomas on the job market

Specialized schools or Grandes Écoles are a distinctive element of the French higher education system, which parallels the classical university system. Unlike Universities in France, which are comprehensive educational institutions covering various fields of study with a large student body, and which are open to anyone with a high school diploma, "Grandes Écoles" are smaller in size and recruit their students with very selective processes.
Grandes Écoles of Engineering usually offer several Master’s degree programmes, the most important of which is the Diplôme d’Ingénieur, the French Master’s degree in Engineering.
To enrol, they must first hold the Bac and then either file in an application or take a competitive examination after a two-year preparatory course in CPGE**. They graduate after successfully completing three-year studies and the diploma is equivalent to Master degree.
Most educational costs are supported by the French government (costs amount to approx 12 000€ per student & per year) so that annual registration fees that students have to pay are limited, especially for University.
To be added : approx 220€ for Health Insurance (compulsory)
3 year of research program
15 Doctoral Schools
4 500 PhD students (40% are foreign students)
850 degrees per year
The École des Docteurs is the federation of 15 Doctoral schools in the area of Sciences and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences.
