china flagThe Université de Toulouse has a strong commitment to China, reinforced by the agreement signed between our University and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) in 2011. With more than 1,500 Chinese students and 195 PhD candidates, Chinese students are the largest international population at the University of Toulouse. The International PhD Office goes every year to China to meet Master students that wish to do a PhD in Toulouse. 

China Scholarship Council Programme

cscThe China Scholarship Council (CSC) provides PhD scholarships to Chinese candidates who wish to be enrolled in the Université de Toulouse.

The partnership between the CSC and the Université de Toulouse is one of the most successful in France, with 17 students founded in 2015, 14 in 2016 and 15 in 2017 to do they PhD in our University. 

Selection Procedure Agenda

  • puce September 2017: Open call for applications
  • puce January 31, 2018: Deadline for Chinese students to send their completed application file by e-mail to the phd-internationalatuniv-toulouse [dot] fr (International PhD office) of the Université de Toulouse (phd-internationalatuniv-toulouse [dot] fr)
  • puce February 2018: Selection by a PhD admission board in the Université de Toulouse
  • puce February 20, 2018: Results of the selection process by the Université de Toulouse
  • puce March 20 - April 5, 2018: Complete online the application online on the CSC's website for the selected candidates 
  • puce May 2018: Evaluation of the applications by the CSC and final selection
  • puce August-October 2018: PhD Students join their research groups and enroll in their Doctoral Schools

All theses can be fully written in English. A minimum level of English proficiency is required for all applicants :

Thesis Proposal

If you wish to meet us for more information, the International PhD Office will participate in a PhD fairs in China in 2017. That fair is an opportunity to ask about our PhD programs and also make a first contact with the Université de Toulouse. Meet us and we will try to help you to find a supervizor to do your PhD in Toulouse!

How to apply?

  1. Browse the list of thesis proposals

If you find a thesis proposal that matches with the research you expect to do for your PhD, apply directly on the website.

If you don’t find an interesting thesis proposal on the list, the International PhD Office can help you to find a supervisor in a research center.

Send a CV and a short application letter including a brief description of your research background to:

  1. After an interview (e.g. Skype), the French supervisor may provide you an invitation letter to accept your application. This invitation is an internal document (in French) for the doctoral school and Université de Toulouse, not for the CSC.


  1. Fill in the online application form carefully (English compulsory).

Send the application to phd-internationalatuniv-toulouse [dot] fr before January 31, 2018 containing all of the following documents in ONLY ONE PDF attached file (Give imperatively the following file name to the document: yourlastname_yourfirstname_yourbirthdate.pdf): 

  • The pdf application form
  • Invitation letter from the French supervisor for the admission board (in french)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Scan of your ID card
  • All diplomas and degrees certificates
  • All transcripts (in English) from undergraduate studies to the Master degree
  • The English or French language proficiency certificate (mandatory)

(The pdf file should not exceed 2Mo, if it is too big you may scan your documents in a lower resolution)


  1. In March 2018, selected candiates will recieve the official invitation fom the International PhD Office.
  2. With the official invitation letter you follow the application process to apply to China Scholarship Council scholarship program. The selected candidates must apply online on CSC's website ( between March 20 and April 5.
